Our specialist workshop is designed for coaches who want to understand
how to support clients in distress, how mental health needs might present
in the coaching room and how to reflect on whether access to a different
type of approach is warranted.

This course will help you to take steps to ensure your coaching practice is
within the legal, ethical and practical boundaries of the profession, to
prepare you towards demonstrating Standard 1 if you are undertaking the
BPS Professional Recognition Route in Coaching Psychology.

SUITABLE FOR:

Coaches who want a space to explore ethical issues related to mental health
and coaching, how to respond to mental health needs when they are
present during coaching, to consider how to support clients in distress,
make safety plans and signpost effectively. This course will be particularly
useful for Coaches without a background in Clinical Psychology or
Psychotherapy, or those with a therapy background who are new to Coaching.

OUTLINE CONTENT:

  • Understanding mental health in the coaching room
  • How do common presenting needs in coaching e.g., perfectionism relate to mental health
  • How do I know when my client might my benefit from a different expertise? 
  • Contracting, informed consent and choice
  • Ethical and legal issues
  • What might I see in a coaching session? How do I know my client is in distress or outside of their window of tolerance 
  • Emotion regulation, neurobiology and getting stuck
  • Supporting my client in distress, including practical strategies for de-escalation, making a safety plan and recommendations for next steps
  • Helping client to access mental health support

The course will include practical exercises, reflection on case examples
and opportunities to ask questions and relate this to your current practice.
